Let’s be honest.  Our moms told us to do it; our teachers told us to do it; and now nutritionists everywhere are telling us to do it:

Eat more fruits and vegetables, it’s good for you!

Some experts tell us to eat 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, but unless you’re vegan or vegetarian, most of us don’t come close.  With our eating-on-the-run, take-out food  and dining-out culture, how are we ever going to come close to making mom happy?  Well, one quick-and-easy solution is juicing.

Juicing is a convenient way to get the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need every day and it has innumerable health benefits, including:

  •       Keeping you trim
  •       Detox and cleansing
  •       Anti-aging and longevity
  •       Disease prevention & treatment
  •       Healthier hair, skin and nails

There are two basic ways that most people juice: make your own juice at home or buy fresh pressed juices.  Making your own juice can be fun and it’s probably more affordable.  After you buy a juicer such as the Breville or Jack LaLanne (be wary of the plastic juicers – they tend to break easily), you’re ready to go shopping for your fruits and veggies.   Remember, when you make your own juice, they say it’s best to drink it immediatelyso only make as much as you can drink in one sitting.

NYC’s Greenmarkets are a wonderful place to get started because they are located in so many neighborhoods throughout NYC and they feature a wide variety of local farmers.  GrowNYC  operates 54 Greenmarkets in NYC including the world-famous Union Square Greenmarket;  Community Markets  operates 6 Greenmarkets in NYC.

When you get to the Greenmarket, look for green leafy vegetables, carrots, beets, broccoli and any fruit because these are detox foods.

If you’re like me and often too lazy to make your own juice, there are now plenty of great stores and cafes that sell fresh-pressed juices including:  Dig InnJuice GenerationThe Juice PressLifethymeNatural Frontier MarketOrganic Avenue, Park Natural Foods, Sunac Natural MarketSun in Bloom and Westerly Market. You can expect to pay $8 – $10 for the real deal at most of these spots.  It’s not cheap, but it’s GOOOOOD.

So, whether you make your own juice or purchase a fresh-pressed juice, your body will say “Thank you!” and your mom will say “I told you so!”

Happy Juicing!

Just 4 days away from the MS Climb to the Top!  Quick recap of the weekend: I got my welcome packet over the weekend and my start time is 8:30am.  I also did my first climb on the stairs Sunday night and OMG it is so much harder than the Stairmaster.  By the 8th floor I was sucking wind hardcore.  I also came down with a really bad stomach flu on Friday morning and was in horrible shape for about 24 hours.  Since I just started a new Pilates Apprentice position I still went to work anyway and took the 4/5 uptown to Grand Central then the Metro North to Rye in Westchester.  Someway, somehow I still think I taught well.  One woman in my class even said that it was the best and hardest Pilates class that she ever took which made me feel great!  Sunday night I watched the E Channel’s Red Carpet coverage of the Oscars and seeing all of the celebrities perfect physiques is what prompted me to throw on my sneakers and take it to the stairs.  I think it was Anjelina Jolie’s perfectly toned leg that really pushed me to run up those 40 flights of stairs.  xo Kristen

This past week has certainly been filled with lots of firsts.  My first paid Pilates Apprentice job, skied my first double black diamond, first blog posting, my first twitter posting (follow me @bodylocalksarlo)  and my first time on the Stairmaster aka deathmaster in years!  I have been trying to build myself up by 2 minutes each time I go on the Stairmaster and so far I have been able to accomplish my 2 minute goal increment.  I know that I am strong enough to do this climb, I just have to keep working on my endurance!

On Sunday my husband and I and a few couples did a day trip to Hunter Mountain and I experienced a real deal climb on the slopes.  I skied past my friends and then realized I just missed our trail and had to climb back up hill-what a workout!  At the end of the day my husband noticed that I was missing one of my diamond stud earrings.  My stomach instantly dropped and I thought for sure it was buried under a pile of snow somewhere on the slopes.  I looked around where I got changed earlier and could not find it, took a deep breath and started telling myself that its not a big deal.  One of my friends was nice enough to to fill out a lost/stolen report for  me since I was in such a panic.  While I was waiting for her I then went back to the same bench and there was my little shiny stud staring me right in the face!  Hopefully I will have the same amount of luck during the Climb to the Top!
